Rahul practises across all of Selborne Chambers’ specialisms with a particular interest in commercial chancery litigation, civil fraud, trusts and cross-border disputes.
Before coming to the Bar, Rahul practised as a solicitor at Slaughter and May in London and at King & Wood Mallesons in Sydney. He also worked as a judicial assistant to the Chief Judge in the Supreme Court of New South Wales (Equity Division) and taught contract and tort law as a Casual Academic at the University of Sydney. His academic writing has been cited by the Federal Court of Australia.
Rahul holds a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws (First Class) from the University of Sydney, where he graduated first place in his law cohort and ranked first in four subjects (Equity, Corporations Law, Evidence and Ethics). He subsequently read for the BCL at Christ Church, University of Oxford, and received the subject prize for Competition Law.
Civil Fraud
Rahul accepts instructions across all areas of civil fraud. His experience includes:
- Federal Deposit Insurance Corp v Barclays Bank Plc (& Ors) – acting for Deutsche Bank in proceedings brought by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation against a number of LIBOR panel banks in relation to alleged LIBOR misconduct and involving claims for fraudulent misrepresentation and breach of the Chapter I prohibition in the Competition Act 1998 (as a solicitor).
- Johnson v FirstRand Bank Limited [2025] UKSC 33 – acting for the Financial Conduct Authority as intervener in a Supreme Court appeal concerning the payment of undisclosed commissions in the motor finance industry, giving rise to issues of law regarding the existence and scope of fiduciary duties, the tort of bribery and the relationship between regulatory rules and private law duties (as a pupil, assisting Jemima Stratford KC).
- Acting for a prominent sporting institution pursuing claims against a senior employee and third party re-sellers in respect of a multi-decade ticketing fraud and including claims of bribery, breach of fiduciary duty, dishonest assistance/knowing receipt, and conspiracy (as a pupil, assisting Richard Blakeley KC).
- Advising a leasehold owner on the merits of potential claims for deceit, bribery and unlawful means conspiracy against the freehold proprietor arising from suspected mortgage fraud (as sole counsel).
Commercial
Rahul accepts instructions across all areas of commercial litigation.
He has experience of a broad range of commercial disputes, including matters involving the sale and leasing of goods, supply of services, agency disputes, guarantees and indemnities, and the proper construction of contractual terms and conditions.
His recent experience includes:
- Acting as sole counsel for an offshore engineering firm in its c.£400,000 claim for breach of contract arising from the provision of marine consultancy services.
- Município de Mariana & Ors v BHP – acting for BHP in this landmark multibillion pound claim brought on behalf of c.600,000 claimants (as a solicitor).
- Acting for a bank in litigation concerning the lawfulness of interest rate variation provisions in standard variable rate mortgages (as a solicitor).
- Asda Stores Ltd v Bremnes Seashore AS [2025] CAT 14 – acting on behalf of the Eighth to Tenth Defendants (Mowi) in a challenge to jurisdiction on the ground of forum non conveniens (as a pupil, assisting Gerard Rothschild).
- Advising a luxury brand on their contractual rights under a long-term sponsorship agreement with a global sporting event (as a pupil with Richard Blakeley KC).
- Advising a bank on its rights arising pursuant to an equitable assignment of a guarantee and its ability to bring a damages claim following a repudiatory breach of contract (as a pupil, assisting Ben Woolgar).
- Advising a pharmaceutical company on the contractual risks arising in relation to its proposed plan to distribute a medicinal product in the United Kingdom (as a pupil, assisting Gerard Rothschild).
- Advising a leasing company on the validity and enforceability of a chattel lease agreement and the scope of indemnity and exclusion clauses (as a pupil, assisting Gerard Rothschild).
- Advising on the merits of a claim under an indemnity clause in a share sale agreement and the application of the “without prejudice” privilege rule (as a pupil with Simon McLoughlin).
Landlord & Tenant
Rahul accepts instructions in relation to both residential and commercial landlord and tenant matters. His recent experience includes:
- Acting in claims for money judgment and possession under the Housing Act 1988.
- Acting for defendants seeking suspension or postponement of an order of possession.
- Acting in a claim before the First-Tier Tribunal concerning liability to pay and reasonableness of service charges in respect of residential property.
- Advising a landlord under a long lease as to its right of forfeiture and service of a notice under section 146 of the Law of Property Act 1925.
- Advising on and drafting an application for relief from forfeiture.
- Drafting particulars of claim in a claim for rescission of a contract for the sale of land and return of the deposit on the ground of fraudulent misrepresentation (as a pupil).
- Advising a landlord on the prospects of asserting a proprietary interest in rental monies held by its agent (as a pupil).
Competition
Rahul accepts instructions in all areas of competition law. He has assisted in some of the most significant claims in the Competition Appeal Tribunal including several collective proceedings. His recent experience includes:
- Justin Le Patourel v BT Group Plc [2025] EWCA Civ 1061 – acting for the successful respondents in this application for permission to appeal concerning (inter alia) the proper circumstances in which the CAT is entitled to draw adverse inferences (as a pupil, assisting Sarah Love).
- Spottiswoode v Nexans France SAS – acting for Ms Spottiswoode CBE as Class Representative in this follow-on damages claim brought on behalf of all British domestic electricity billpayers (as a pupil, assisting Gerard Rothschild).
- Infederation Limited & others v Google LLC & others – acting for the Claimants in this damages claim brought following the Commission’s Google Shopping decision (as a pupil, assisting Sarah Love).
- NHS v Servier – acting for Lupin, a Part 20 Defendant in the long running “pay for delay” competition damages claim in the pharmaceutical sector (as a pupil, assisting Sarah Love).
- Merricks v Mastercard [2025] CAT 28; [2025] Bus LR 1426 – acting for the Access to Justice Foundation in relation to its entitlement to undistributed funds from collective settlement (as a pupil, assisting Gerard Rothschild).
- Advising an insurer on the risks of providing capital protection insurance to a litigation funder in respect of its funding of proposed opt-out collective proceedings (including prospects of obtaining a collective proceedings order and merits of underlying claim) (as a pupil, assisting Gerard Rothschild).
Arbitration
Rahul accepts instructions in all areas of arbitration. His experience includes:
- Acting for the respondents in an LCIA arbitration involving loan and guarantee claims, interpretation of good faith obligations, and the impact of international sanctions (as a pupil, assisting Richard Blakeley KC).
- Advising a commodities trading company on the strategic and procedural advantages of pursuing arbitration or court proceedings in respect of three related claims valued at c.€120 million (as a pupil with Richard Blakeley KC).
