Compulsory acquisition - a tool used with increasing frequency on this crowded island

Compulsory acquisition is a tool used with increasing frequency on this crowded island. Local government may acquire land in delinquent ownership for housing purposes or to improve its appearance and end blight.

The City of Westminster is well known for its "Operation Gridiron" compulsory acquisition of housing stock in Soho which was being misused by seedy sex businesses.  Other London boroughs have made use of compulsory acquisition to buy back right-to-buy flats so as to facilitate redevelopment of residential estates, or to acquire brown field residential development sites left fallow by incompetent owners.  Great Yarmouth BC now offers a bespoke service to assist acquiring authorities through the procedural jungle.
